And the “to do” list grows ever longer… « Miss America ~ An ...
Insurance in America. Practically everyone reading this has probably had to deal with it and probably hates it as much as I do. However, it is a necessary evil today even if you have the “just in case you are about to die” kind, otherwise known as major medical. Well, this morning after a heated argument with my current insurance provider I am forced to navigate my way through the heady waters of abroad health insurance. (I won’t get into how the jerks cancelled my policy because there was a mix up with the bank and then only gave me TWO days to pay (one of which was not even a business day even though they indicated on the letter someone would be available to take payment) when the minimum processing time (as described by said insurance company) is THREE days. Can someone please explain to me how I was supposed to get a payment in on time?) But alas, the list. Here it is. The incomplete and overwhelming “everything I must do before I basically move away forever” list…
1. GET NEW HEALTH INSURANCE. (Anybody know of good (and relatively inexpensive) health insurance for US citizens abroad?)
I read something about getting your name on at least two utility bills to get banking access in the UK? Not sure as it was awhile ago. The Gent has promised to look into this, but as men do, he has forgotten. I don’t think my bank in the US has an international account option but thanks for the HSBC heads up. I’ll definitely give it a look.
Miss America — fantastic blog! I’m cracking up because this list looks JUST LIKE MINE right now. I’m headed to the UK in December on student VISA for 1 year from California. (I’m originally from Ohio.) Anyway — I know that the VISA laws change all the time, but last time I was going on a visitor’s VISA, you didn’t have to officially apply for the 6 month deal if you are a US citizen. You might want to check on that. (The rules change every time you sneeze.) If you do have to do the official VISA route, be prepared for them to require ridiculous letter from your bank that lists the minimum amount of money in your bank account for the last 3 months — and then be prepared that your bank will mess this up at least twice.
